En se promenant dans le centre-ville, on découvre sur certaines plaques de rue des numéros d'arrondissements. Ainsi, par exemple on trouve le 3ème arrondissement non loin de la Cathédrale, et le 5ème vers le passage Pommeraie.
Pourtant officiellement en France, seules Paris, Lyon et Marseille ont des arrondissements municipaux: 20 à Paris, 9 à Lyon, et 16 à Marseille. Au temps de l'Algérie française, la ville d'Alger fut, elle aussi, divisée en 10 arrondissements.Et Nantes alors ?
Dès 1790, Nantes a connu un découpage administratif en 6 arrondissements.
Mais il faut attendre septembre 1809 pour qu'une ordonnance de police impose la mention du numéro d’arrondissement sur les plaques des noms de rues de la ville.
Puis, à la suite de l’annexion en 1908 des communes de Chantenay et Doulon, Nantes sera divisée en huit arrondissements.
